What does it mean that electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation are “coupled processes”?

In the mitochondria, the oxidative phosphorylation and electron transport are coupled. This means that for the process of energy production to work, electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation happens in the Electron transport chain. These reactions are essential for extracting energy via redox reactions hence giving energy. In essence, the coupled process means that for one to happen, another must have happened and one cannot  work without the other.
