How would the Buddhist Notion of desire fit with the ideas of addition or obsession? what if one is obsessed with something good like freedom for one's country?

The Buddhist idea of desire is one that is more related to craving for things which are better. Here, the faithful seeks to be separated from experiences which are pain giving and unpleasant. This fits with the idea of obsession which is more of craving as well as addition where one needs more of the good stuff in life. If one is obsessed with the good things like freedom for ones country, he pushes for better lives of the people living therein, progress is possible through advocating for better rights. This way, they bring more freedom to their people. Such Obsession, unlike one of possessions, is the best.
