Before the United States adopted the constitution, the Articles of Confederation was the
formal and legal document that governed the US, it bestowed nearly all the national
government's duties on a single chamber legislature, Congress. With the Article of Confederation
lacking the federal judiciary made it ineffective, this, therefore, made the delegates to convene at
the constitutional convention In Philadelphia (1787) for the quest to agree in the inauguration of
the national judiciary (Zelden, C. L. 2009).
At the Constitutional Convention, the first proposal presented was the Virginia plan
which was to institute both a supreme court and inferior federal courts. While the opponents of
the Virginia plan presented the New Jersey plan which advocated for the formation of a single
federal supreme law court which they argued that the state of the court was more effective than
the federal courts since the former could handle all lawsuits. The dispute was settled by one of
