The August 2018 Prison Protest
On August 2018, incarcerated women and men from almost seventeen states in the
United States began the largest most branded prison protest ever historically documented. It was
a two-week long protest in what was considered a very peaceful way to dissent about the adverse
conditions in jail particularly jail life without parole amongst several other concerns regarding
human rights. The protest was essentially timed to start on the anniversary of George Jackson,
who was an African American activist killed in jail. Jackson was killed in 1971 by a known
guard after he took two inmates and guards hostage in order to flee from the San Quentin State
Prison situated in California. The 9th of September was the last day of the strike that also had
symbolism. It was the day that riots from Attica Prison started in New York, which left more than
50 individuals dead during a police storm to retake that facility. The participation of the prisoners
also depended on each one’s privileged status as well as location. They perceived that the protest
would only be effective when widely spread.

help in the prison which was paramount to initiate the strike. Before the strike, the inmates were
subjected to severe punishments for shirking their respective roles and responsibilities during the
protests (Desta, 2019). However, during the 21st August 2018 to 9th September 2018 strike, the
inmates across the country abandoned their duties, some of them even went on a hunger strike to
attract attention in regard to whatever they perceived as exploitative and adverse conditions of
prisons in America.
In reference to (JLS) Jailhouse Lawyers Speak, the inmates held on to the discernment
that they were being mistreated. That means that the kind of treatment they received in jail can
be likened to that of animals. Accordingly, the American prisons are principally warzones

particularly because every day; several prisoners are harmed as a result of the harsh and rigid
confinement conditions (Desta, 2019). Therefore, the prisoners viewed themselves as already
dead and by protesting, they had nothing significant to lose.
Additionally, the prisoners were in dire need of a press conference whose purpose was to
declare a list that contained ten national demands constituting of enhanced jail conditions as well
as policies for the humanity of all women and men imprisoned to be recognized (Hepburn,
2014). This would end prison slavery and also promote the payment of proper wages. Besides,
they needed a revoke of life sentences in disregard to the probability of parole, which is also
known as “death by incarceration”. Apart from that, the prisoners were also...
