Shaima Algarni April 11, 2018 Activity 13: Inductive & Deductive Reasoning 1- Watch the scene from Sherlock Holmes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=388rOzD9SM) and address each of the following: a. Choose two arguments from the scene. b. Identify whether each argument is inductive or deductive. c. Construct the argument using the following format: Premise #1: _______________________ Premise #2: _______________________ Conclusion: _______________________ A. For the first argument is about how Holmes talked about his observation of Watson. Sherlock realized that Watson’s sword was shiny, kept cleaned and placed in a right good manner. Another observation he made is that Watson was a gambler and military man. This was observed by Holmes when he took a stubbed wrestling match ticket from Watson’s left pocket. My second argument is going to be on how Holmes was trying to read Morsten started with an observation to confirm his theroy. Therefore, he observation started with her neckless and how shiny it was which means that she was a governess or a rich woman. Then, moving to the shadow in her ring finger and that she was engaged once, but since the ring is missing that means she is not anymore. He concluded his observation by determining that Marry Morsten was a governess and who lift the man that she was engaged to. The conclusion of Marry Morsten was all right beside that the man who was marry engaged to died and she did not leave him. B. The first argument of Watson is inductive for the reason that the Holmes started with observations that led him to a theory while the second argument is deductive since Holmes started with a theory and generalization that then helped him to detect some observations and then a conclusion. C. In argument 1: ❖ Premise 1: the sword ❖ Premise 2: Ticket stub ❖ Conclusion: Watson is a gambling and military man In argument 2: ❖ Premise 1: The jewels were shiny and kept well ❖ Premise 2: Shadow of a ring in Morsten’s ring finger ❖ Conclusion: Governess who engaged once and then left her man 2- Besides detective work as we saw in the Sherlock Holmes scene, describe in 2-3 sentences a real-life situation that may rely on the use of deductive and inductive reasoning. - In a real situation, when you are walking back home from the library in a light night and then in your way you saw a man at the end of the street who looks sketch. This man is wearing all black and look drunk. Also, you are the only two who is in this street, therefore, it will be safe to assume that you better avoid this man and take another way back home for your safety. Activity 13: Inductive & Deductive Reasoning Instructions: In class we discussed the logic behind inductive and deductive reasoning, as well as specific examples of each of these types of reasoning. For this activity, you will watch a short scene from the movie Sherlock Holmes (2009) in which Sherlock Holmes uses reasoning to reach conclusions about his friend Dr. Watson’s new fiancé, Mary Morstan. You will then decompose the premises and conclusions of arguments within this scene. Refer to class notes from Units 10 (Logical Reasoning) as well as the Facione and Gittens (2013) readings from each of these units to help you complete this activity. (1) Watch the scene from Sherlock Holmes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=388rOzD9SM) and address each of the following: a. Choose two arguments from the scene. b. Identify whether each argument is inductive or deductive. c. Construct the argument using the following format: Premise #1: _______________________ Premise #2: _______________________ Conclusion: _______________________ Hint: if an argument you chose is deductive, also make sure to follow the appropriate language template (e.g., denying the consequent, applying a generalization, etc.). (2) Besides detective work as we saw in the Sherlock Holmes scene, describe in 2-3 sentences a real-life situation that may rely on the use of deductive and inductive reasoning. This activity must be submitted to eCampus as either a text submission or an attached file no later than 11:59pm.
