Explanation & Answer
Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!
Criteria (criterion) is the standard by which a person can judge something. Two of the ways that criteria function in helping someone make an important decision is:
1. Helping rank choices. This ranking will then help the decision maker decide, and the best choice is usually the highest rank choice.
2. Compare choice with the decision maker’s objective or values. By identifying a set of criteria, the decision maker can easily compare and contrast choices based on her values as an individual.
For example, I have 3 people I am considering dating exclusively. All of them are lovely people in their own rights, but I need to choose. I am now ranking them based on a set of criteria I made according to my personal values. For example, I am a very independent person so I want an independent partner as well. Independence is a top criterion.
