Spirituality And Religion In Cancer Patients
In recent years, cases of cancer have become rampant all over the world. Cancer is a
broad term which describes a disease caused when changes happen to the body cells which
eventually cause an uncontrolled division of the body cells in a certain body organ. This can
happen rapidly or within a long period where some of these cancers are visible while others such
as leukemia which is blood cancer are not. The result of these unusual cell development is that
the cells use the nutrients and the oxygen that should be used to nourish other body cells and
impaired the body immune system making the patient weak and casing the improper body
functioning (Salsman, Fitchett, Merluzzi, Sherman, & Park, 2015). There are various causes of
cancer where some can be preventable, and others are not. Some of these preventable causes are
poor nutrition and cigarette smoking.
Background Information
There are unpreventable causes of cancer which include a situation where cancer is
hereditary and is passed from one person to another genetically. Some common types of cancer
include lung cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, kidney cancer among others (Kadar, Scott,
Hipp, Belavich, Butfer, Rye, & Zinnbauer, 2015). Treatment of cancer depends on the stage of
cancer and the type of cancer as well as the general health of the patient. However, a lot of
research is being done to come up with a better understanding on cancer as well as more
effective medication and treatment as well as preventive measures that can be implemented to
lower the risk of developing cancer (Greenstein, 2016).
Stacy Simon in on October 21, 2015, wrote that patients suffering from cancer with
strong spiritual and religious belief report better health compared to non-believers. Stacy Simons
