Background and Reasons of Interest

  • I became interested in the topic after I start my third year in school. AI will change a lot of future things based on my major which is Electronic/Electrical Engineering and the education of it.
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are commonplace in almost every sector of the economy. Many developing nations as well as developed nations are heavily investing in artificial intelligence (Lu et al. 368-375).
  • AI systems have the ability to learn perform many tasks in the same manner that human beings do. With this in mind, AI systems have a great potential of replacing human beings in performing industrial tasks, considering that such systems can be more precise and accurate that human beings in performing the tasks.
  • The impact of AI on employment may be twofold. What makes the topic interesting is the rate at which AI is integrated in almost every sphere of the economic world.
  • AI can drastically improve healthcare outcomes through the integration of targeted treatment and AI-based healthcare diagnostics (Stone et al.).

Research

  • The most important question to ask is; how has artificial intelligence affected employment rates? In order to answer the question, one must affect the development of AI systems and value how each stage of AI development has affected the rate of employment. For a more detail, a multi-sector analysis is necessary. Other research studies have primarily focused on the development of AI systems. The article “Artificial intelligence and Robotics” focuses on the connection between robotics and artificial intelligence. Robotics is based on the advances in computing, electrical engineering and mechatronics. By combining the different technologies, robots are able to perform auto tasks. Incorporating AI gives robots a more superior functionality and an ability to learn from the environment for improved performance. By focusing on the relationship between robotics and artificial intelligence, Perez et al. clearly points to the existence of a direct effect of artificial intelligence on employment, considering that robots are mostly used for automated industrial manufacturing.
  • Stone et al. in the article “Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030” focuses on the impact that AI has on the daily lives of human beings. The authors project that by 2030, there will be an increase in the use of artificial intelligence applications, including but not limited to, autonomous cars and physical assistance systems for the elderly. Stone et al. state that “Considering that people are already used to technologies such as smartphones, it is expected that there will be more personalized relationships of people and machines. More intelligent AI systems that can collaborate more with people including possibilities of people to teach robotics will be the focus” (126).
  • Lu et al. in the article “Brain intelligence: go beyond artificial intelligence” focus on the impact of AI on the economy of Japan. The article points to the comprehensive development of artificial intelligence systems. According to Lu et al.“the central focus is on developing various artificial intelligence Robot technology (RT) and information communication (ICT)” (43). There are also wide attempts to improve the BI intelligence model of learning on industrial robots, precision medical care, and automatic driving (Lu et al (87). While these research studies provide a background context in understanding the impact of artificial intelligence on employment, there is need to further assess articles that directly focus on the impact of artificial intelligence on employment. Consequently, I will do some more research to get more details of focusing on the impact of artificial intelligence on employment.

Audience/Benefits

  • The main audience of this paper is the current workforce and students that are yet to join the job market. Through this paper, the audience will be able to understand how rapidly growing AI systems are likely to affect their chances of getting employed or maintaining their job positions (for the current workforce). With this information, the audience is required to adjust accordingly to retain their connection in the labor market.

Introduction
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a simulation of human intelligence through use of
medium such as computer systems and other machines. AI process entails acquisition of
information using reasoning to reach conclusions and self-corrections.AI systemsare being
developed for the sole purpose of amplifying human potential through machines’ adoption of
human like cognitive abilities, thus increased productivity and reduced cost. These
technologies are applied in various industries including healthcare, financial services,
advertising, and manufacturing. The adoption of AI by employers has had a significant
impact on employment, by replacing human labor in performing certain tasks, but has
also led to growth of technology related industry segments, thus creating new job
opportunities for graduates and young professionals. In the workplace, AI can be weak or
strong depending on the particular task it is trained to perform. Some of these systems such as
virtual assistants like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa are trained to only perform a
particular task. On the other hand, some other systems tend to be stronger as they entail use
of more complex abilities. Most companies now have access of AI as a service (AIaaS)
though cloud offerings including Google AI and Amazon AI(Frontier 2). In terms of
functionality, AI can be classified into reactive machines, limited memory, theory of mind,
and self-awareness systems. Reactive machines are designed with a narrow purpose of only
being applied in one situation. Limited memory systems, which are the key decision making

functions in technologies such as self-driven cars, are systems which can rely on past
experiences. These AI function systems make it possible to change lanes, but the
observations from past experiences are not stored permanently. Theory of kind AI systems,
which are expected to understand one’s intentions and desires, do not currently exist. Same
case applies for self-awareness systems which are expected to have consciousness. However,
even though most of these technologies are still under development, the last decade has seen
significant development where most of the science fiction dream on human like machines is
slowly becoming a reality, and is impacting employment both positively and negatively.
Part 1
Various studies have been carried out in relation to substitution of workers’ skills with
artificial intelligence. Some experts have argued that; while artificial intelligence has a
positive impact on businesses, it has a negative impact on employment. Firms which have
adopted high skilled Artificial intelligence tools tend to have a more optimistic view
compared to those with low skills. Studies have also proven that in addition to polarizing the
workforce, AI and robots will create unique products and services whose innovations will
create unimaginable occupations. These will be unique changes of the fourth Industrial
Revolution where rather than people being out of employment as a result of technologies,
they will adopt new ways of doing things, and hence technology related occupations will be
more popular while more traditional occupations will be extinct.
According to a report by Stanford University on ‘Artificial Intelligence and life in
2030’, the impact of AI on each job sector will vary (stanford.edu 23). The article highlights
that there will be a shift in distribution of jobs as job descriptions and tasks change. The study
foresees a 20% increase in employment opportunities in sectors such as health care.
However, jobs in manufacturing will likely experience a 25% decrease in human employment

opportunities as AI takes over most of the processes. The transport and storage sectors will
also experience a decrease of at least 15%. These technologies will displace some of the
existing jobs, as employers attempt to generate higher productivity gains. Adoption of these
machine will increase productivity and lower cost. In addition, the few employees in machine
dominated industries are likely to have higher income since available jobs will require high
machine operation skills and cognitive abilities. For mitigation of unemployment issues
which may arise as a result of extensive AI adoption in the work place, the study
recommends that people invest in science, technology, and engineering skills in order to be
able to complement AI systems. The report advises that employees should always be open to
embracing change, and should be ready for needed skill advancements and training,
especially on how to utilize certain technologies to improve productivity.
Quantitative evidence provided by studies has proven an existence of a strong
relationship between IA and human labor. Most of these studies have indicated a substitution
of human labor with AI, especially in performing routine tasks. This has therefore led to
accusation of AI as a polarizer of the labor market. According to research findings, at least
