In my view. Siddhartha Guatama's quest to find enlightment is a desire. In the Buddhist religion, desire is the need for good things to happen and that the bad things not to. Which is what Siddhartha was after. In the modern culture, such a decision to leave would have been received with contempt, accusations and wrath by the society. Though people still believe on religion, they do not believe that one has to do exactly what the early rwlogionists deed.
