Introduction

Health Psychology refers to the study of the behavioral and psychological factors that can
affect illness and healthcare of an individual. Cultural factors can also contribute to physical
health and illness. Health is a product of the thoughts, feelings, habits and socioeconomic status
of an individual. The chronic illness that an individual experiences can negatively affect them
and their family members. On the other hand, drug addiction is a chronic illness that can be
treated by a combination of medications and therapies that are lifelong processes. However,
support systems can also ensure that recovery is active and relapse is prevented.
The psychological impact of chronic illness on an individual and their families
The psychological effect t of chronic illness on an individual is direct. This is because the
patient is forced to adapt to the new state of health challenges. This is not usually easy for
patients, and before they adapt, they experience depression and anxiety. The social and
emotional functioning of the patient deteriorates since the experience is traumatizing (Schiaffino,
Shawaryn and Blum, 2018). Additionally, when one suffers from a chronic illness, they feel as
though they are burdens to their family members. Also, the extra attention provided to the patient
by the health caregivers and their family members makes it difficult to adjust and deal with the
transition.
Therefore, their social connections and interactions are also affected. This results in
emotional distress and anxiety that causes psychological distress. The severity of the disease
builds low self-esteem for those suffering from chronic illnesses. This is also contributed by the
lack of self-concept which may affect their mental health. On the other hand, chronic illness
impairs the ability of an individual to get on with life; hence they are unable to develop or
