Why Women can’t have it all

Women empowerment is a noble idea and very significant towards development of the
society. Over emphasis on ambition and career progression on women should however be
tampered with the need to raise healthy families. It is the wish of everyone to live his or her own
dreams, it is quite refreshing to rise to the top of one’s career but there are always limitations to
such achievements. All parents take their children to school with the wish that they will become
top doctors, engineers or the best career, but it is always important to ask oneself, how much
efforts? How much is one supposed to sacrifice in order to satisfy all these expectations? These
are some of the issues that the society should always put into perspective as we strive to make
the best out of our society.
There is no doubt that women deserve empowerment more than men due to social,
cultural and sometimes religious beliefs. Many cultural backgrounds across the world tend to
treat our women as second class or as less important compared to their men counterparts. This
has resulted to having less women in leadership positions, the corporate sector and even in the
religious leadership domains. This form of discrimination led to welfare programs that brought
about affirmative action to women. Affirmative action was tailor made to ensure that women are
brought at the same level with men, it was supposed to create a level playing ground where no
one had more advantage than the other. Years of affirmative action across the world has led to
the rise of feminine activism and feminists. People who believe that women must succeed in
their careers by all means. Individuals who believe that women can “Have it all”

example of having one’s children at the age of early 20s. She depicts a scenario whereby once a
woman gets married or bears children at a tender age she is able to make sure that the children
grows in her care so that by the time she hits 40 years age they are already grown. This scenario
was possible in the 60s and 70s but in today’s world things are a little bit different. Examples of
women who have excelled in their career but they don’t have families are many and this means
that everyone should strike a very delicate and important balance between work and family.
Anne-Marie quotes the former secretary of state Condoleza Rice as an example of a successful
woman who doesn’t have a family at the expense of he...
