Monitoring Employee Behavior

This paper explains the reasons employers monitor their employees and also explains the
benefits and consequences of employee monitoring. This paper also explains some of the
arguments against employers engaging in employee monitoring. It further discusses some of the
vendors that offer employee monitoring software, summarizes the types of solutions offered by
the software and their costs, and finally recommends one suitable employee monitoring software
to organizations.

The Electronic Communications Privacy Act explains that any systems provided by the
employer are a property of the employer, the provision of a computer and internet access makes
the employer at liberty to track the employees’ activity online. Staff monitoring involves the use
of workplace surveillance to gather information about the activities and the location of the
employees. These monitoring include examining the logs of websites visited, opening staff
emails and listening to voicemails, the use of CCTV cameras to record staff activities and also
recording telephone calls. Some of the reasons that make the employer monitor the online
behavior of employees are; to avoid legal consequences, preventing violence at the workplace, to
improve productivity, and to protect vital information (Mishra & Crampton, 1998).

company condones such behavior. Such material can be used against a company to file a case on
sexual harassment. This makes the company’s alert to avoid any form of legal consequences
(Mishra & Crampton, 1998). Online behavior of employees is monitored by the employer to

Employers can intercede these types of exchanges and create a safer environment for
working hence prevents violence at the workplace. Employers also monitor the online behavior
of employees to improve productivity. Employers usually install software that tracks the amount
of time an employee spends visiting sites not related to work or when they engage in aimless
surfing. This makes it easy for the employee to correct the issue by limiting internet access and
speaking to the employee concerned. This improves productivity when employees realize they
are being monitored hence focus on their work. The employer is able to protect vital information
while tracking the internet habits of the employees. The company can be protected against the
leak of sensitive and vital information (Mishra & Crampton, 1998). When employees become
disgruntled or stressed by the employer, they can access computer files containing trade secrets
and use the internet to leak this sensitive information to competitors. Thus, monitoring employee
online behavior can prevent data with sensitive info...
