The treasury secretary, Mr. Alexander Hamilton, suggested an idea of creating the Bank
of the US. This bank was aimed at absorbing the national debt from the revolutionary
conflict and creating a countrywide currency.
The Maryland state vehemently opposed the establishment of the national bank and the
creation of a branch within its territory. However, a branch was stashed in Maryland in
1817.
The Maryland state reacted to this development by taxing the branch of the national bank
that was in Baltimore, in a determination of putting it out of business.
