Introduction

Diversity in the work environment essentially steers respect, acceptance, and teamwork
irrespective of differences in age, gender, sexual orientation/ sexuality, race, religion, political
affiliation, and ethnic background. It entails the range of differences between people in an
organizational setting. Studies cite that entities that are seeking to cultivate an inclusive and
diverse work environment should understand the necessary components of workplace diversity.
Product and process creativity is majorly driven by employees who come from a wide assortment
of backgrounds and demographics. There are several benefits associated with diversity within the
organization. However, firms should identify and address some of the biggest diversity issues in
the workplace (Barak, 2016). This paper will discuss identity and assess some of the diversity
challenges that arise within the work environment.
Problems Encountered within the Workplace
One of the problems encountered while working in my organization involves the
insensitive jokes and comments made by some colleagues regarding gender, age, sexuality,
physical ability, and other differences of some employees. Fundamentally, the organization
consists of employees from a diverse background with differences in their physical appearances.
This sect of employees is often the minority, and they tend to be victims of oblivious and
biased comments made by some employees who come from the majority population. For
instance, since almost 70% of the company’s employee population is whites, their religious
affiliation is Christianity and are heterosexuals, they usually make unreasonable and scornful
comments to those employees that belong to the minority population such as African-Americans
and Latinos, members of the LGBTQ community, and employees whose religious affiliations are

Islamic, Pagans, and Atheists among others. In other words, 30% of the organization’s
employees are victims of disparaging remarks regarding their ethnicity, race, gender, and
physical disabilities. Such comments cause physical, emotional, and psychological problems to
the victims, who end up losing their morale, decreasing their productivity and job performances,
developing job-related stress and eventually quitting their jobs (Harvey, & Allard, 2015).
