Between the years 1846-1848, the Mexican-American war took place marking the first
conflict by the U.S that was fought on foreign land. The war pitted Mexico which was divided
politically and unprepared militarily against the James K. Polk’s administration which was
expansionist-minded. The president James K. Polk had a belief that the United States had a
“manifest destiny” which it had to spread across the whole continent up to the Pacific Ocean.
There was a skirmish along the border with which the war started off and a series of victories by
the US followed. There are various reasons that the war was started. The author Ramon Eduardo
Ruiz views the war as an act of imperialism using the idea of “manifest destiny”. He also
