Abstract
Americans often identify themselves as peace-loving. Foreign policy has been an essential
part of the nation’s development since the 18th century. External existence played a crucial role in
the birth of the Americas. Throughout history, the U.S has taken a distinct approach towards
foreign policy by actively engaging in foreign affairs. This paper introduces the historical
background of the U.S foreign policy and diplomacy inclusive of the guiding principles of
American policy. In addition, the paper discusses Truman’s administration with a specific focus
on the policy of containment, the Marshall Plan and the civil wars in Greece, China, and Korea. In
addition, the paper discusses the Eisenhower Administration with a focus on the rise of
“brinksmanship” and the advancement of the cold war as a global threat. The paper finalizes with
the Kennedy Administration with a focus on the major changes of his presidency.

Introduction
External assistance was crucial for the birth of an independent United States. The concerns
about local threats and global threats influenced the creation of foreign policy in 1787, which has
since molded the political culture of the United States. This policy resulted in a change of vision
influencing America’s involvement in foreign affairs such as the entry into World War I, return to
“isolationism” and even disarmament. American diplomacy is symbolized and defined by the
relations between Cuba and the U.S between 1898 and 1961 (Williams, 1988). The U.S declared
war on Spain in 1898 with avowed objectives of freeing Cuba, establishing and underwriting
independence of the Island and initiating and sustaining its development towards economic welfare
and political democracy. During the subsequent six decades, the United States exercised a
powerful influence in and all over Cuban affairs. The United States foreign policy and diplomacy
have been primarily engineered from the nation’s active and influential involvement in world
affairs. Throughout history, the United States has taken a distinct approach towards foreign policy
based on a number of guiding principles that comprise of; shared faith in their destiny, rebel against
Britain, appreciation the western values, unilateralism, open diplomacy, promotion of free trade,
freedom of the seas and self-determination of nationalities (Herring, 2008). This involvement
