Becoming a Good Writer

Becoming a Good Writer
According to Brande, (2016), becoming a good writer usually entails a number of things
and they may include; reading widely so as to get different and diverse writing styles as well as
improve one’s creativity and also writing with simplicity such that the reader will be able to
understand the ideas with ease. It is always advisable for a writer to read widely as this will open
up his mind to a wide range of new lessons and ideas (Eschholz et.al, 2016). In addition, writing
with simplicity is also important for any good writer because the main aim of writing is to pass
an argument, opinion, or idea to the writer and if the writer cannot get the intended idea, then
such writing will be of no use as it will not have achieved its main purpose. Therefore, this essay
seeks to discuss the best ways of becoming a good writer and summarizing two writings which
are; “Simplicity” and “Reading to Write”.
The journey towards becoming a good writer requires some efforts as it is not always
easy as many people may think and being a good a writer does not just come automatically. This
essay tries to elaborate on how one can become a good writer and gives some important things to
be considered by anyone who aspires to be a good writer. In addition, this essay contains
summaries of two essays written by different authors and these essays include “Simplicity” by
William Zinsser and “Reading to Write” by Stephen King. Zinsser’s essay emphasizes on the
need for one to exercise simplicity in his or her writing and ensure that the reader is able to
understand the ideas of the writer with ease and without having to reread over and over in order
to grasp the information which the writer was trying to pass across. On the other hand, King’s

essay emphasizes on the need to read widely so as to improve creativity, get new writing styles
and be a good writer. Other important things to consider in order being a good writer include;
rewriting and writing often.

Essay 1: ‘Simplicity’ by William Zinsser
The greatest secret of good writing is stripping every sentence to its cleanest elements or
parts. In addition, the numerous adulterants which weaken a sentence’s strength include; words
which serve no function, adverbs which carry the same meaning as that already contained in the
verb, long words which could be made shorter, passive constructions which do no clearly show
the reader ‘who is doing what’, and all occur in proportion to rank and education (Eschholz et.al,
2016). It is worth noting that clear thinking usually becomes clear writing and none of the two
can exist without the other and this would mean that no muddy or poor thinker is in a position to
write good English. According to Eschholz et.al (2016), a muddy thinker may be able to write
one or two paragraphs in good English but soon, the reader of such work will be lost and it is
obvious that there is no way the reader will be lured back easily. The reader usually has an
attention span of just around 30 seconds as he or she is usually assailed by a number of forces
that compete for attention. Sometime back, these forces were few, consisting of; children, pets,
spouse, radio, magazines and newspapers, but nowadays these forces include a wide range of
electronic devices which are used for receiving information and entertainment such as DVDs,
television, VCRs, cellphones, internet as well as a pool, fitness programs and sleep which is most
pronounced among these competing forces (Eschholz et.al, 2016).
