Privacy especially data privacy has always been of great importance. Privacy is the
reason why people put passwords on their accounts and use locks on their doors. Most people
especially those from industrialized countries are concerned that the intimate and most personal
details of their lives are being searched, recorded or monitored either by the government of third
parties. Every private citizen has the right to privacy. Principally, the danger of data collection by
online companies is that it can be disastrous if the information falls in the wrong hands as it can
be used for illegal motives.
In Menand's article, Why Do We Care So Much about Privacy? Explains that big tech
companies want to exploit personal data whereas the government wants to monitor and keep tabs
on each (Menand). Privacy policy updates are frequent from online services because of the
General Data Protection Regulation enacted by the European Union, and this has enabled users
to gain control over the information collected by online companies. Lately, the internet seems to
have taken control of people’s data in regards to their age, their home address and the likes and
dislikes of a user. Most online users have no idea who is seeing and using their data. Firms like
Cambridge Analytica a few years back received a tongue lashing for harvesting and distributing
personal information of Facebook users. Facebook knowingly stores a lot of personal data and
sell it to other firms.

Further, Cambridge Analytica (CA) didn’t harvest users’ data through hacking
techniques; instead, the firm devised an app which users downloaded (Menand). After
downloading the app, users’ data and their friends’ data was accessed. The app was successful in
collecting data of the users who had not downloaded the app and in spite of this security concern,
Facebook refused to acknowledge the concern as a security breach claiming that the data was
legally harvested. Other than CA, Timothy Carpenter is a threat to digital privacy when he used
his cell-phone company to collect information which he was used to committing a series of
crimes.
Amazon has been accused of listening in on confidential conversations by use of the
‘smart speaker.' Amazon failed to recognize this as a security breach and termed it as “an
extremely rare occurrence” (Menand). Menand (n.p), adds on that in 1948; DC had an
