understand the extent to which social media contributes to political polarization in the United
States. A number of literature suggesting an increase in political polarization among the US
electorate was found. According to Abramowitz & Saunders (2008), in over a decade ago,
twenty percent of political party affiliates had unfavorable views of opposing parties. By 2016,
the number had increased to nearly fifty-five percent, and according to Pew Research, there are
no signs of a slow down. From 1994 to 2014, the number of US citizens with strong and constant
ideological opinions across a series of political questions increased from ten percent to twenty
percent. Several researchers believe that the internet has been acting as an ‘echo chamber' or a
‘filter bubble.' The author found strong empirical data suggesting that people find compatible
sources on social media and are very likely to connect with like-minded people on the internet.
