Nursing Theory
The nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals is self-care nursing theory.
This theory states that nurses have a role that is centered on supporting patients until they get
ability to care for themselves (Wong, Choi, & Lam, 2015). Patients are supposed to be selfsufficient and accountable for any care extended to them by a nurse.
The nurses apply this theory through prescription. A nurse prescribes drugs to the patient,
and they do that to support the patient to become self-sufficient and responsible for individual
care (Wong, Choi, & Lam, 2015). After prescription, it will be the sole responsibility of the
patient to make sure that they follow the instructions given to them. Nurses can also apply this
theory to counselling and guidance. In some scenarios, nurses are obligated to counsel and guide
patients, and this objective of doing this is to ensure that the patient is responsible and selfsufficient.
The self-care nursing theory fits into my professional practice in the sense that I am
professionally responsible for guiding the patient. As a nurse, my work is not just to treat the
patient, but also to guide them on how they can manage their health. I am equally mandated to
build a robust nurse-patient relationship, which will go the whole hog to inspire them into being
responsible for their care. A patient that believes they have a reliable and genuine connection
with a nurse inspires them into seeing the need for them to be accountable.
