The Disability Rights Movement
A social movement can be defined as joint activities organized to bring about
fundamental change or resist the change in a society or group. Social movements are
collective enterprises organized to establish a new order of life. They are as old as human
societies, the time when people started to live in organized communities. People always clash
for one reason or another as different members of society perceive things differently and have
different opinions over issues affecting them. Throughout history, there have emerged many
social movements to protest changes in society which they felt were not satisfactory or were
discriminatory.
At other times, as the definition suggests, movements rose to bring about change and
establish a new order of life. For example, the Civil Rights Movement which began in the
early 1950s was a social movement created to change the status quo of the time, the African
Americans were discriminated against and oppressed by the system. The women's Rights
Movement also rose to bring about such change. However, this paper seeks to discuss the
disability rights movement, its emergence, and impacts on society. Social rights movements
are essential in society, and their ideas must be listened to before the formulation of public
policy because they provide a red light that the status quo is not satisfactory.
As early as the 19th century, there was already some general feeling of discontent
among people with disability due to the forms of discrimination that they were facing.
