Solve Equations With Coefficients 

  1. 5/7y=13/14 I got 10/13 but my teacher said it was 1.3 but i divide the fration and it was a really long decimal i cannot figure this out

To isolate y (aka solve for y) you need to divide by the coefficient 5/7.

Divide by 5/7 on both sides so the equation now looks like this...

(5/7)y/(5/7)=(13/14)/(5/7) The coefficient in front of y will disappear now because any number divided by itself is 1.

y=(13/14)/(5/7) When you divide by a fraction (5/7) it is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal (7/5).

y=(13/14)*(7/5) Now just multiply the numerators together and then multiply the denominators together.

y=(13*7)/(14*5)=91/70=1.3

This is the answer.
