Description

You will prepare a written research design proposal within the field of criminal justice but can be related to the topic of your choice. (In other words, it can be related to sports or politics or fashion or whatever floats your boat, but needs to have a criminal justice element)

There is not a single “right” way to approach this question. Your job will be to justifyyour decisions. Your paper should address (but need not be limited to) the following:

  • Research Topic
  • Research Problem
  • Research Question
  • Purpose of the Study
  • Methodology
  • Research Theory
  • Research Design
  • Ethical Considerations
  • Validity/Reliability Concerns
  • Sampling method
  • Data Collection method

• Research Topic Typically short, maybe one or two sentences. The research topic is where you establish the phenomenon you will be addressing (e.g. the topic of this proposal is the correlation between child neglect and juvenile delinquency). • Research Problem 1. 2. 3. 4. • • • • • The purpose of a problem statement is to: Introduce the reader to the importance of the topic being studied. The reader is oriented to the significance of the study and the research questions, hypotheses, or assumptions to follow. Place the topic into a particular context that defines the parameters of what is to be investigated. Provide the framework for reporting the results and indicates what is probably necessary to conduct the study and explain how the findings will present this information. In other words: So what? A problem statement should contain: A lead-in that helps ensure the reader will maintain interest over the study, A declaration of originality [e.g., mentioning a knowledge void, that will be revealed by the literature review], An indication of the central focus of the study [establishing the boundaries of analysis], and An explanation of the study's significance or the benefits to be derived from investigating the research problem. Research Question While a research problem statement is a short description of a specific research area or issue that you intend to address, with an explanation of why that area/issue needs to be addressed, why addressing this area/issue is of importance, and what overall benefit (i.e, to society as a whole or to other researchers) addressing the issue may provide. You then narrow down the research problem to one or more specific questions that are concrete and can be answered by experiment/review of data/literature review, etc. • Purpose of the Study This is a clear statement about the objective/purpose of the study. This is where you talk about why your study is important and what it could bring to the scientific knowledge base of your field. • Methodology Qualitative vs Quantitative and why you chose this method. Why is this method appropriate for your study? Use citations to support your claim. • Research Theory Ch 8 Theory helps guide the research. Theory helps develop the questions you will ask your participants and ultimately what you write about. If you choose to use rational choice theory as your guiding theoretical framework, then your paper would address the rational choices of individuals, etc. • Validity/Reliability Concerns Ch 3 How will you let the reader know that you did in fact measure what you intended to measure? Also, address potential shortcomings in your research model and/or ways in which your research can be expanded upon (you can reference the sample here). • Ethical Considerations Ch 2 Describe the ways in which you will protect your participants and always keep their best interests in mind. Also address ways in which you will make sure you are covering yourself as well. • Sampling method Ch 6 How will you determine who you are going to talk to and, most importantly, why? Make sure you explain your decision regarding your sample (which includes your population) and why it is appropriate for your study. • Data Collection/Analysis method In this section you will describe for me how you will gather your data (meta analysis, interviews, etc). You will also tell me how you will analyze your data to get actual results to discuss and analyze. If doing qualitative: Survey/Interview Questions - Why these questions were chosen (think back to theoretical framework and your initial research problem) Research Proposal Grading Rubric Criterion Information 25 points CRJ 302: Research Methods – Dr. Johnson 20 points 15 points 10 points 0-5 points Most information was clear and accurate, but was not usually thorough. 2

Impact of presidential policies on crimes related to illegal immigration
Research Topic
The paper will try to determine whether there is any correlation between presidential policies and
offenses related to undocumented immigrants.
Research Problem
In many countries, such as those in Europe and the United States, immigration policy is
dominant to political debates. The one reason that causes the politicians to focus on the subject is
that they believe there is a correlation between the administrative policies and crimes related to
immigration. Those favoring strong immigration policies feel undocumented immigrants commit
a variety of crimes, and hence the need to remove them is of paramount importance. However,
those opposing the plans argue that the measures and policy implementation are
counterproductive because there is a diversion of resources that would have been used to fight
severe crimes, such as terror to enforcing regulatory policies, which makes immigrants less
cooperative with law enforcement agencies. There have also been researching aimed at
determining whether there is any link between presidential policies and reduction of crimes
related to illegal immigration if there are any (Ciancio, 2017). The research used the non-border
policy of 2011 that helped to reduce non-border deportations drastically. However, with recent
developments and increased rate of crime, this research will analyze the various policies
implemented by the former United States President, Barrack Obama and the sitting Donald
Trump, to determine whether their policies have any impact on crimes related to illegal
immigration.
