Introduction
Diabetes is a chronic disease that emerges from the presence of high levels of glucose in
the blood. It occurs when the pancreas, the organ responsible for producing insulin, fails to produce
enough for the body. Also, a person develops diabetes when the body becomes resistant to insulin
while other times both scenarios lead to the development of diabetes. This insulin is an important
hormone that controls blood sugar levels; hence any interference with it has the potential of
interfering with blood sugar levels, and the result is diabetes. The most common occurrences of
the condition are Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational diabetes.
Diabetes in Australia
In Australia, diabetes mellitus is the most common form of the illness (Harding et al, 2014).
At the same time, it is the fastest growing of all the non-communicable diseases in the country.
According to statistics, every one in 25 adults has diabetes mellitus, also referred to as type 2
diabetes. As of 2003, the diabetes problem accounted for five percent of the disease burden in
Australia. However, it is estimated that by 2023 this number is bound to increase to nine percent
of Australia’s disease burden.
