Introduction; General Motors background
General Motors (GM) is an American multinational company with headquarters situated
in Detroit, USA. GM specializes in the designing, manufacturing, marketing and distribution of
vehicles and vehicle parts in addition to the selling of financial services. General Motors is the
largest manufacturer of automobiles in the United States and one of the largest in the world.
General Motors manufactures vehicles in a total of 37 countries with various brands such as
Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. The company also holds and owns a controlling interest in
other foreign brands for instance Wuling, Holden, Jiefang and Baojun (Klein, 2000).
At the beginning of the 20th century, there were less than 8000 cars in the United States
of America. Many of the cars available at that time were powered by electricity or steam, while
some had petrol engines. General Motors was founded in the year 1908 by a man called William
Durant. William Durant had begun by manufacturing vehicles that were horse drawn. General
Motor’s design studio was led by Harley Earl until he retired in the year 1927. Harley Earl is
credited for coming up with the 1927 Cadillac LaSalle (Bayou, 2008).
During the 2nd World War, General Motors provided the allies with materials exceeding
$12 billion. These materials included lorries, airplanes and tanks. By the year 1942, all of
General Motor’s production was to support the World War. In the year 1940, President

new wartime office of production management. After the 2nd World War, General Motors
developed unibody construction, independent front wheel suspension and also the one-piece steel
roof (Coase, 2006). The 1949 Chevrolet Corvette, the Buick Roadmaster, BelAir and the 1959
Cadillac El Dorado assisted in setting the tone for styling automotive through the 50s, also
