This is a story of Denmark Vesey, a young slave well-regarded by his master, schooled in French and English, who by a stroke of luck--he won $1,500 in a lottery--purchased his freedom, lived respectably for years as a free man in Charleston and conceived of the idea of forming alliances with 9,000 slaves into an avenging army to slay every white man, woman and child in Charleston, and then sailing away to Africa and freedom. Unfortunately, he was betrayed by a house slave before the commencement of the rebellion. This was not much of surprise, given that the whites could easily trick slaves to sharing secrets for exchange of better treatment and promised freedom. Vesey and his fellow alliance leaders were arrested and eventually paid the ultimate price of execution.
