Safety in the Petroleum Engineering Industry
Abstract
We are happy about new technology developments yet saddened by the pollution we see
in our streets and areas near industries every day. Why should we have angry looks yet we are
the ones that contribute to the destruction of nature? As engineers participate in the petroleum
mining exercise, several safety issues emerge. There are several health problems which are
caused by the extraction of the hydrocarbons (Chandrasekaran, 2016). With several
environmental organizations existing in the globe, policies have been set to govern industrial
activities which contribute to the endangering of the human, plant, and animal species. The rules
and regulations regarding environmental protection have even been transferred to the operational
ethical framework of engineers. This paper focuses on the first law in engineering ethics which
talks and emphasizes the role of engineers in the protection of the environment. The paper covers
several areas such as how the petroleum industry is a threat to the community, reasons why it is
worth to abide by this first law of engineering ethics, the strategies needed to be employed to
increase safety, and the barriers to effective safety policies implementation. The safety issues
have extensive coverage and affect even the employees physically during the industrial
processes.
Introduction
Safety is an essential thing in human life. One needs to be safe from conditions which can
cause him/her any harm. Statistics indicate that there have been several cases of people getting
hurt in the mines while trying to excavate the oil core. Some even are left with disabilities as
others lose their lives. Nevertheless, there is the widely known effect which the petroleum

industry is recognized for, pollution. The petroleum engineering industry contributes to water,
soil, land, and even air pollution. Tons of carbon and other toxic gasses which contribute to the
greenhouse effect are released to the atmosphere every day.

As a matter of fact, the petroleum industry is now classified as one of the significant hazards
industry in the world. We cannot live without using fuel, and for such, the industry will continue
to exist. Without this industry, most businesses in the world will close down. How will airplanes
fly? How will cars move? What this means is the breakdown in the transport infrastructure which
will lead to delays. With delays, there will be an effect on the supply and demand curves in the
market (Chandrasekaran, 2016). This can lead to the setting in of inflation and affect the living
standards of the people in the community. What this implies is that despite the adverse effects
posed by the petroleum engineering industry, we still need it to exist. Therefore, safety is the
main thing which the concerned party should pay attention towards. That is, formulate new
strategies to help in mitigating the risk.

Literature Review
The 19th century saw an increase in industrial activities. The rise set in with the industrial
revolution during which plantation farming became common among settlers in the world. People
started growing cash crops which need processing in the factories. As time went on, thousands of
factories were established and the need for oil and petroleum products escalated. This also led to
increased concern of the safety issues in this sector leadin...
