In most countries in the Middle East, revenue from natural resources especially oil
accounts for the better part of the GDP. In the United Arab Emirates, the contribution of oil
to the GDP has reduced and is expected to drop even further in the future. Currently, the
contribution that oil makes to the economy is set at 30% and will probably have dropped to
20% in the next few years and is expected to be insignificant in about 50 years. In the recent
past, the region has moved towards the diversification of the economy. In 2015, research
showed that the GDP of the UAE came from non-oil related sources. 70% of the country’s
economy was from other sectors (Harrison, 2015).
Most of the countries in the United Arab Emirates have reserves of oil and fossil fuels
that formed the major source of income for a long time. However, in the recent past, the oil
reserves have been dwindling in some parts of the region making it necessary for the
countries to think about alternative income generating venture including banking, foreign
investment, tourism, and many other sectors that are unrelated to the oil sector. Regardless,
the United Arab Emirates is well endowed with oil resources, and the economy is still
relatively concentrated on the oil sector about other industries. The economy depends
innately on the oil sector and is therefore unreliable.
