Carolina
The American Civil war was the turning point for women struggles as far as their roles in
the society was concerned. Before this war, women’s work revolved around homes tending for
household chores. They were mainly expected to prepare food and clean and to prepare home for
the comfort of the family plus their expected guests. With the onset of the civil war, things
changed a little bit with women now volunteering to take part in the war. They took up a variety
of roles and fit in in various capacities in an effort to help where they could, and stand counted.
Some of these roles entailed nursing, cooking, and taking part in the actual war. Generally, it
could be noted that the Civil War experiences of the Southern Women have attracted more the
attention compared to those of the Northern women. This could be attributed to the fact that the
Southern women mainly lived in the geographic lands that were under contention (Green 132).
Earlier histories point to the fact that the middle class white and the elite women were more
focused on diaries and letters making it possible to access these resources by the researchers.
Conversely, more recently, researchers have extended their scope of work and adopted a broader
spectrum to include women of color, poor, rich and whites in the struggle.
Numerous scholarly materials have pointed to the fact that women have been a forgotten
lot, totally cut out of the conversation involving manly endeavors such as wars, and especially
