Description

Goal: to explore and offer your evaluation of how effectively the series portrays _____. (In the blank you should focus on whatever interests you and is depicted in The Wire. Some examples include but are not limited to: the un/realistic depiction of policing in an inner city, the use of technology in the show, gender discrimination on the force, racial profiling on the streets, the different layers of criminality among the different groups (from drug pushers to politicians), the plethora of violence and hopelessness, etc.) I would suggest focusing on no more than two elements of the show, unless you are a skilled writer and give equal balance to three elements. Please do not try to cover everything. I would much rather you focus on depth than breadth. Ideally, the focus of this analysis should not repeat what you have previously written in this class, so if you have already covered police brutality, consider a different focus. You do need to cite specific episodes.

Please do not: resubmit work you already wrote on the show, give me a plot review, waste space offering info on the actors (bare minimum, if you must) or focus extensively on what other critics have said about the show. I'm looking for your interpretation of the text we have worked with all semester.

Introduction
“The Wire” is a show that became the popular subject of contemporary investigation and
analysis of urban communities where it focused on the social maladies such as poverty and
institutional collapse that led to criminal activities. It has been claimed by the creator of the show
that “The Wire” represents the other side of America where people are victimized by postindustrial capitalism’s logic and are neglected by the responsible authorities and wealthy
neighbors. It illustrates the complexity in enforcing just laws in the real world and other social
issues such as racial discrimination. Furthermore, it demonstrates the characters’ fates living in
the city of Baltimore influenced by institutional forces which is beyond the control of the
constituents. It also illustrates the difficulties encountered in the fated nature of life in the urban
community. The show also demonstrates citizens who are deprived of the social benefits but are
coerced to obey the rules as well as the limitations mandated by the law. This paper aims to
analyze the use of the gender discrimination on the force as among the issues that are focused on
the show.
“The Wire”: Is there discrimination in its representation on gender equality in the force?
In one of the research it has mentioned that female specifically colored women are
underrepresented in various forms (Williams & Press, 2017). In the show, “The Wire”, the
representation of women is deemed to be highly biased. Women portrayals were also created in
this cop series where the character is represented by Detective Shakima Greggs. In the first
episode, she was presented as in-charge on the operation of drug bust and she has portrayed
police roles in other scenes showing as competent detective who obediently responds to the
demands of the superiors in the police force. Kima is conceived as skilled in her profession as

member of the law enforcement who deserved the respect of the higher-ups police officers and
subordinates. This stereotype portrayal of professional women, the distinction to become more
respected by her fellow officers has further been highlighted in the later episode of Season
1when she joined other officers in savagely beating Bodie. This scene shows that she is a cop
and should ready to defend her co-workers. However in the first season it was already evident
that the show is generally portrayed by masculine and women roles becomes just secondary
(Williams & Press, 2017).
Policing: Gender Issues
In the study conducted by Wilson (2016), it has detailed the personal experiences of female
officers in the law enforcement that raised the awareness on the concerns of professional women
in the police force. It has mentioned in this research that women were not allowed to join
policing for a century from its inception. It was in 1800 that women were permitted to join the
force but their role was limited by working with their husbands who a...
