Abstract

There has been a rising requirement for sensor-guided mechanical devices that can
distinguish working conditions and control interaction of tool points with reverence to tissues. The
need is directing exact infiltration through malleable tissues and controlling relative motion with
respect to bending tissue interfaces and targets. For the last two to three decades, a lot of
innovations have been done concerning invention of modernize smart surgical tools. Such surgical
tools have played a great role in terms of saving human lives from deaths. These tools have been
classified under orthopedic surgery. Thus, surgical tools such as surgical drill have advanced from
a hand held tool to a more portable drill that gets its power from lithium ion battery. The tool is
made of a drill bit which is connected to a chuck with a rechargeable lithium battery. For the last
two years, Integra Systems have been working hand in hand with the other surgical companies in
designing the modern intelligent "SMARTdrill".
Currently, surgeons use these drills when drilling bones. Though these tools have proved
to be efficient, there are challenges involved when drilling, firstly, bones are made of both cortical
and trabecular parts. Therefore, surgeons are restricted from going or drilling through the entire
bone. Plunging or drilling through the bone risks vascular injury which may result to nerve damage
as well as compartment syndromes. To lower the plunge effect, surgeons are advised to push the
surgery tool slowly using the forward momentum. This is meant to avoid heat generation which
kills trabecular components resulting to death of cells. The good thing with the new drill is that, it
guarantees real time feedback about the applied drilling energy, bone density and strength.
Determination of strength and density of the bone makes it easy for surgeons to use the right
technique and implantation for the patients. Moreover, determination of the bone drilling and
screw insertion energy makes its easy for surgeons to have a balanced fixation when drilling

through bones. Alternatively, the new surgeon tool provides performance response through
determining dull cutting such as drill bits before thermal damage to the bone. If the FDA approves
this tool, more lives will be saved from deaths.
