Introduction
Running is a movement that allows people to move quickly on foot. It is different from
walking as in walking; one foot is usually on the ground as opposed to running where both are
aerial at one point. In running a little jump is involved. Running styles involves footstrikes which
is the way a runner makes initial contact on the ground as they leap to the next step. One can
either use their forefoot, their midfoot or heel of their foot to hit the ground first. Depending on
the way a person runs, there are quite a number of ways they are susceptible to injuries. In
general, most running injuries occur when a runner uses a rearfootstrike as compared to the
midfoot or forefoot. The latter is considered more natural as, in history; humans used the forefoot
footstrike in their hunting careers. There has been a discussion of making athletes to change their
rear footstrikes to the more “natural” forefoot footstrike to avoid injuries in the field. Running
injuries are mainly caused by repetitive stress to the tendons, ligaments and lower body bones.
These are known as overuse injuries.
Background
It is assumed human developed the sense to run about to 2-3 millions of years ago most
probably for hunting purposes. Competitive running about 2-3 thousand years back and it has
become one of the most accessible sports in the world. People have been running for various
reasons ever since running was accessible and they’ve been running barefoot for the most part.
Later on, sandals or moccasins were used. It’s not until the 1970’s the modern running shoe was
