List and describe the American Bar Association’s pledges of professionalism.
Concerning the court and other tribunals, the lawyer pledges to be cautious to those he or
she comes in contact with during his or her work. The lawyer is willing to be respectful to his
fellow staff and the judges, refraining from pursuing claims that lack merit and notifying other
counsel in case of rescheduling of hearing of a trial or if the case was cancelled. "I will continue
to expand my knowledge of the law." This means that the one taking the pledge is willing to
continuously add knowledge to what he or she currently has. The person also recognizes the
limitations he or she currently has and is ready to expand his or her technical and professional
skills concerning the law as time goes by (Cunningham Warren, 2014). "I will achieve and
maintain proficiency in my practice." The lawyer agrees to successfully reach the desired goal in
his or her field of professionalism (Cunningham Warren, 2014). He or she also pledges to
preserve the level of excellence achieved regardless of the situation or circumstance that will
come during his or her practice of the law. This pledge is made in respect to the clients entrusted
in his or her care.
With respect to the justice system and the public, the lawyer pledges to work together
with other participants in the legal system to, make it more responsive and accessible. This
includes working hand in hand with the opposing council, judges and every other person who
does not have enough money to pay for adequate legal help. This will make the justice system to
be accessible for all regardless of their class or status. With respect to the lawyer's client, the
lawyer pledges to keep the client well informed and equally involved in the major decision
making of the things that directly affect their lives (Cunningham Warren, 2014). This shows that
the lawyer requires to give the client objective advice concerning the matters at hand not
withholding any possible alternative methods of dispute resolution. He or she is also expected to
2
advise the client against any tactics that intend to unnecessarily delay the resolution of the
matters at hand or drain the resources of another party.
