I will say that I was not much surprised by the fact that there are so many points of
consensus between various theories that we covered. The one case that really, I was glad to learn
is the aspects of similarity and convergence between liberalism and republicanism. Classical
liberalism is similar to classical republicanism of Edmund Burke in the way that both are in favor
of free market, without any government involvement. But Burke was opened to change. He
thinks that the best should be preserved or “conserved”, and things should change gradually to
give people time to adjust. Modern republicanism is even more rigid than classical liberalism.
Both believe on the self-correction of the market. But modern conservatives unlike Smith who
recognized that market have certain imperfection, believe of the fairness, and the honesty of the
market. Republicanism and liberalism are also attached to tradition, specially religion and are
against abortion, and believe that everybody should have the same right.
The main point of consensus between liberalism and republicanism as learnt in class is
that these two ideologies share is the fact that both of them are concerned with the welfare of the
individual. Classical liberalism is concerned with the commitment to the individual and the urge
to develop a free and open society where people can find fulfillment by achieving their dreams
and freely expressing their concerns. This means that this principle tends to protect the people
from the interferences of the government. It attempts to argue that a person should be given the
freedom to make their own decisions and to express their concerns freely. Similarly,
