Pete was enjoying his junior year at Big State University until his room mate came down with a flulike upper respiratory infection. Sure enough, Pete started getting achey and feverish, and got pretty congested. He was not worried however, until he realized how stiff his neck was and that he had the worst headache he had ever felt. He noticed that he was developing a bright red rash, and some of the spots were turning blue-black. He went to the infirmary where they got very concerned and did a lumbar puncture to get a sample of Pete’s cerebrospinal fluid. Gram negative diplococci were observed in the fluid.

Microbiology Case Study: Meningitis
Meningitis would be the most appropriate medical diagnosis for Pete’s condition.
Meningitis results to a swelling of the meninges that proximate to the spinal cord and the human
brain, therefore, as a result of these swellings, symptoms are triggers early symptoms that may
mimic those of the flu as exhibited by Pete such stiff neck, headache, and fever. However, over
hours or days, more significant symptoms tend to develop and emerge. (Brouwer MC,
2015 )Possible signs and indications comprise of extreme body fever, acute headaches, bright red
rash which develop to blue-black., stiffer neck, nausea, and vomiting. Cases of confusion,
problems in concentrating seizures challenges waking, light sensitivity to light may occur
depending on the type of meningitis the patient has contacted. (Brouwer MC, 2015
Diagnosis
Pete's meningitis diagnosis should be based on his existing medical records then undergo
a physical examination and then a couple of diagnostic tests. The physical evaluation should
identify any indicators of infection around this head, skin, throat, ears and along the length of his
spine. Once that is complete diagnostic tests are conducted which include, blood cultures,
imaging, and lumber puncture. In the initial blood culture test, Pete’s blood samples should be
collected and placed in a petri dish, to observe for any micro organismic growth, principally
bacteria. Another blood sample (or sometimes spinal fluid) should be positioned on a glass slide,
and Gram's stain applied for observation under a microscope's light for bacteria. Magnetic
resonance imaging or computerized tomography scans, of the patient’s head, ...
