7x + 5y = 32

- 3x + y = - 20

from the system of equations above, we can eliminate y by multiplying the first equation by 1 and the second equation by 5 and then we subtract the 2 equations.

1(7x + 5y = 32)     = 7x + 5y = 32

5(- 3x + y = - 20)   = - 15x + 5y = - 100

(7x + 5y = 32) - (-15x + 5y = - 100) = 22x + 0y = 132

therefore to find x;

22x/22 = 132/22

thus x = 6

to find the value of y, we eliminate x form the equation. this is by multiplying the first equation by 3 and the second equation by 7 and then adding the 2 equations.


3(7x + 5y = 32)  = 21x + 15y = 96

7(- 3x + y = - 20)  = - 21x + 7y = - 140

(21x + 15y = 96) + (- 21x + 7y = -140) = 0x + 22y = -44

therefore to find y;

22y/22 = -44/22

y = - 2
