Running head: RESEARCH PAPER PROPOSAL Research Paper Proposal Institution Affiliation Date 1 RESEARCH PAPER PROPOSAL 2 Proposed Topic: Barriers that African Americans (race) face towards receiving quality health (healthcare) in the United States. Definition of the Problem According to Boulware, et al. (2016), the barriers that face the African American in their search for quality health can be categorized into intrinsic and extrinsic. One of the intrinsic barriers is that of lack of health awareness. There is no much effort being made towards the education to the black Americans on matters of health as compared to the whites. This has led to them lacking the required services due to the lack of know-how on its importance and how to attain it. This makes them prone to various diseases and health conditions. In terms of sociology and interactions, African Americans have been noted to have a fear of seeking health services. According to research most blacks in America have been subjected to discrimination and prejudice to the extent that they have always feared seeking health services. Their interaction with the caregivers has been limited as a result, and their health conditions always deteriorate as each day passes. One of the sociological theories on the barriers of access to quality health care amongst black Americans is that of Self Actualization Theory. This theory talks about how an individual can gain some self-identity and self-worth towards different aspects of life. In this case, the African Americans communities should accept their presence and begin seeking health care in the best facilities on the land. One concept to handle this issue is that of the ability to think critically and the correct making of decisions. This is where they can realize that their health is equally important to them and engage in search of quality health. Review of the Literature RESEARCH PAPER PROPOSAL 3 According to Boulware, et al. (2016), one of the limiting factors for black Americans from accessing quality healthcare is that of the cultural beliefs and customs. Many of the black Americans have their origin in the African countries where they believe so much in their traditional ways of handling things. One of the traditional ways some believe in is that of the use of herbs and wild medicine to cure diseases. Many of the times the traditional herbs do not cure all the diseases, and the blacks end up suffering for failure to seek services from the more modern facilities. Another article by Branson, Davis Jr, & Butler, (2017), opposes the point that African Americans do not receive adequate awareness on matters health. Currently, black Americans involve themselves in disease prevention activities daily. Some of the activities that they have been taught through public awareness and are indeed practicing is that of issues to do with immunization and promotion of breastfeeding and nutrition. According to the article, they also involve themselves in observing proper food safety, oral health and the aspects of proper sanitation. According to Ashton et al., (2015) the article highlights some of the health disparities that African Americans has towards the receiving of quality healthcare. Adult’s obesity of the black/African Americans is currently at 48 percent. Over 8% of the black/African Americans are more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes and are twice more likely to begin treatment for endstage renal disease. Unlike the white, the black/African Americans are 1.5 more likely to be hospitalized, and 20% are more likely to have a visual impairment. Additionally, it has been observed that black Americans men's are 30% more likely to suffer from hypertension while the chances of black Americans women suffering from hypertension stands at 60%. The risk of firsttime stroke is more prevalent to black Americans more than the white, and they are less likely to keep this blood pressure under control. RESEARCH PAPER PROPOSAL 4 Thesis Statement: African Americans are facing challenges in their quest to access healthcare in the United States, and this is being caused by several factors that are playing a part.
