Do I need to do distributive property on the "-"?

 When you have a minus sign − in front of a  parenthesis, you change the sign of every term within the parenthesis. So change + to − and − to + .

a − (b −c + d) = a − b + c − d.

It is like you do distributive property with (-1) as a coefficient.

In  your example the result is:-(2x^2+x+1)= -2x^2-x-1
