The aesthetics of photography can be viewed from the standpoint of Hume’s “standard
of taste.” The comparison of photography with other form of arts can be based on the “finer
arts” embedded in photography. It is important to note that the “inner sense” for beauty and
taste for fine art is what is redefining the perception about photography in comparison with
other forms of art. Photography appeared during the last two centuries and has been
considered for more than one century as less valuable than painting, sculpture, and dance. In
concrete terms, several philosophers of art and critics stated that photography could not be
considered as fine art. The status of photography as fine art has been challenged for several
years until the early 20th century. For instance, in France, photographers were allowed to
participate in the yearly art exhibitions held in Paris. Thanks to the pressure of the Society of
French Photographers, in 1859, the works of some photographers were exposed during those
exhibitions (Marshall et al., 2018). Surprisingly, the photographs exposed were immediately
put in comparison with paintings, while the public found many similarities between these two
categories of art. Alfred Stieglitz was one of the first individuals to advocate for the
recognition of photography as fine art. As a photographer, Stieglitz’s work was rejected by
several museums with the argument that his work was too ordinary to be viewed as fine art.
However, Stieglitz’s work applauded by several painters. Stieglitz realized that as long as
photographers would practice their art with the aim of imitating painting, the originality and
uniqueness of this type of art would not be perceived. Thus he started encouraging
photographers to free up their art from the shadow of the painting by placing a significant
emphasis on the images and landscape that only photography could do best (Marshall et al.,
2018). Today, photography is taught in several art schools but mostly as an option while
