Description
he Israeli-Palestinian Conflict---What is really happening...
For thousands of years, up to the 20th century, the land of Palestine was a homeland for Christians, Jews, and Muslims, first beginning with Judaism well over 2,000 years ago, then Christianity in the 1st century, and finally Islam in the 5th and 6th centuries as each religion came to be. In fact, the name “Palestine” did not find its way into use until the early 20th century.
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is actually pretty easy to understand. What makes it difficult is the massive amount of propaganda and false information out there that mislead our understanding of what is actually going on.
Two of the most important Rules of International Relations (Rule #4 and Rule #5) help us best understand why this conflict came to be only in the 20th century and why it seems to never end. The two Rules of IR are as follows:
- Rules of IR #4: When you can’t accept responsibility for your actions, blame someone else…
- Rules of IR #5: Some issues never get solved because someone doesn’t want them to be solved…
As you can imagine, these two rules go hand-in-hand in explaining everything going on in the Middle East today. They have proven themselves time and time again in the history of that region. Consider the following in your response:
- What is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict REALLY about? (HINT: It is not about land or religion)
- Based on Rule of IR #4, who is doing something that they are blaming on someone else? Why?
- Based on Rule of IR #5, what motivations might someone or some group not want the conflict solved, and who might that be?
Now I do not expect the class to be Middle East experts here and, unfortunately, a LOT of the information you find on the Internet is inaccurate garbage on this issue, so please feel free to ask questions.
Keep in mind that you do not have to respond to each of the above bullets. Rather, this information is simply to provide some ideas on how to respond. As always, please feel free to ask questions.
Please remember to support your opinion with well thought out fact. Do not just state your opinion and leave it without giving the reasons why you think that way.
