Smartphone Addiction

Smartphones gained popularity across the globe in the late 2000s. During this period, the
number of people using increased rapidly. A high rate of population growth has led to the
development of new versions of smartphone extension and software. A smartphone is a mobile
device that has the ability to access network and communication. It has made life easy in
communication, marketing and doing businesses. This has made life very easy as information is
easily and readily accessible. There has been a lot of inventions from the expert which broadens
its market. Cases of problematic use of smartphone and addictive personality which has resulted
to smartphone addiction have been reported. Smartphone addiction is attributed to the effective
marketing strategy of smartphones by companies. Nowadays smartphone is regarded as a status
symbol as a person is identified via his/her phone number. It’s of more significance to consider
both the pros and cons of smartphone use. While smartphone has developed tremendously since
their inception, there is a lot of concern about safe use as supported by psychological and
statistical researches.
According to Goldberg and Young, Smartphone addiction is considered to originate from
internet addiction which is regarded as an impulse control disorder without an intoxicant
involvement. Hence it's akin to pathological gambling. The behavior of smartphone addiction
mostly comes due to the interconnection where people mingle through social media platforms
Smartphone habit is established in web fixation in light of their similitudes in qualities (Kwon,
Kim, Choi, Gu, Hahn & Min). Moreover, the two poses undesirable effects to the user such as
visiting forums and playing games. Their characteristics include isolation or loneliness.

According to the psychologists the addiction develops over a long time usage of the
phone where the user develops some closeness with the other people on the other side of
communication therefore creating a permanent bon of addiction. They tend to become irritated
and restless easily which deny them a level of concentration in their duties. This happens because
the smartphone has become part of their day-day life and tend to control their life directly or
indirectly. Therefore, with the reduction in call rate, or losing the smartphone, all the symptoms
that are related to addiction tend to become prevalent. According to the research carried out by
Sanchez-Martinez and Otero on smartphone use among adolescents in the Madrid community,
adolescents have the highest probability of contact other people through the use of social
networking via a phone. This method is passive than the use of direct call relation. Most of the
symptoms that are directly related to smartphone use are only experienced with the people who
are addicted to them.
The user becomes pre-occupied with the addiction and uses a lot of time on the phone.
They require an awareness that this dimension of habit is a territory of concern and caution is
required so as to recoup from this conduct. Some of the addiction sign are spending more money
on topping up credit in order to call and browse than on necessities, smartphone battery lasting
for a few hours, using in even in bathroom/ toilet, feeling irritated when you don't have the
phone. A great deal of mediation in our life can result in issues from phone users as well as
irritate others. Therefore, their use requires to be controlled to avoid intruding excessively in our
life. However, this anxiety is termed as a “Nomophobia" which is the uneasy feeling when a
person who has been addicted to phone don't have the mobile phone or battery is down, such
kind of people are called "mobile phobia"

Smartphone addiction is viewed as the enormous cause of social scientific perspectives in
contemporary society. According to James Katz view in his book the perpetual contact, he
concludes that private talk, mobile communication, and public performance has transformed
social practices and the way handling business yet people are still unaware of their adverse
impacts of the smartphone on their life. Adriana Beach in his article psychological predictor of
the problem of mobile phones said: "some of the people continue to use their smartphones
regardless of safety regulations".
In addition, he remarked that there is a growing concern about smartphone use because;
most of the smartphone users tend to become addicted and these devices are also used to violate
privacy and other individuals. Particularly, there was a piece of evidence that, smartphone are
used by children to bully their fellow children. Other studies conducted by the National Institute
of Neurological disorder and stroke explain that there is asthenopia disease which is directly
related to a prolonged time of looking directly to a smartphone screen.
Griffins discusses that the smartphone addiction has a close relation with cancer
infections. According to the research conducted by Griffins which was a combination of 13
research sources the phone nasalization is one of the most known experiments ever done
involving the smart phone usage. In the research finding it was concluded that there is a rapid
increase in the central nerve to all the smartphone addicts worldwide. According to a study
conducted in the University of Florida by Lisa Melo and Amanda M, they found that the Cellular
Addiction Scale score had a mean of 62.6 with a normal distribution. Therefore, these results
suggested that the ability to display addiction of smartphone symptoms greatly changes within
the general population (Kwon et al. e56936).

The smartphone are used to make day to day communication with the other people.
Across the globe, the majority of the people using these smartphone devices in controlling,
planning or even directing on a project which is easy and accessible in 24 hours. The following
are some of the statistical facts associated with smartphone addiction. 60% of college students in
the US consider themselves as smartphone addicts, 71% of the people usually sleep with their
