Question One

Herzberg’s two factor theory states that there are normally certain factors that
motivates someone who is working while on the other hand, there are factors that would
cause dissatisfaction. Some of the factors that cause motivation include how much one is
paid, the working environment, the fringe benefits, the administrative policies, and finally the
job security. Therefore, the employee in this case states that she is no longer motivated by the
pay check because most probably the pay check can no longer sustain her needs. On the other
hand, the Maslow hierarchy of needs is relevant in today’s context because it brings to our
attention the reasons for human behaviour and decision making. The self-actualization
concept, for instance, is important in that it draws to our attention the fact that people have a
number of needs that need to be met before others. This explains why some needs are more
pressing than others. This means that the employee is no longer motivated by the pay check
because they are not able to meet the hierarchy of needs that this particular employee has.
