The American Civil War is regarded as one of the most important events that ever took
place in American history. The war formed the central event especially for the people who
directly experienced its magnitude in the years 1861 to 1865. The war has been regarded by
scholars as the one most important event that shaped the United States. Its impact on the
American people is greater than the individual impacts of the country's participation in the
European wars and the First World War. It resulted in the deaths of 620,000 people with many
more carrying the scars of the war throughout their lives (Kingseed, 2004). Abraham Lincoln,
who was a member of the Republican Party, plays an important role in the course of the war as
he served his terms as President of the United States from the time he was inaugurated in 1961 to
his demise after reelection in 1964 (Abraham Lincoln: The War Years, n.d.).
Most of the men who fought in the Civil War did not believe that the war was a collision
