1. What sets Po, the hero of Kung Fu Panda, apart from the traditional archetypal hero?
In most cases, the conventional way of portraying heroes includes strong personality
types such as bravery and courage. The physique of these heroes is also striking since they
are often portrayed as brawny individuals with super strength and even superhuman
capabilities, fulfilling tasks that normal human beings would not be able to undertake.
However, the portrayal of Po, the hero in Kungfu Panda takes a completely different
approach. Contrary to many archetypal heroes, Po is unhandy and plump. While most heroes
are either exceptionally briliant or powerful, Po lacks any of these characteristics. Po is
exhibited while struggling with everyday simple activities such as tumbling down the stairs,
experiencing hardships when creeping around small spaces. Po also lacks the seriousness
associated with typical heroes as he is seen stroking his enormous stomach and causing it to
wiggle. Po is also not fit for extreme physical activities and a long walk leaves him panting
and grasping for air. However, in the end he ends up training in Kungfu and overcoming the
villain.
