Answer the following journal: Both stories -- "The Story of An Hour" and "Marriage Is A Private Affair" -- are about marriage, although they are set in very different settings. Discuss how gender roles and societal views on marriage are similar (or different) in the two stories. What was each author saying about marriage, in your opinion?

Chinua Achebe's story Marriage Is Private Life and that of Kate Chopin titled the Story
of An Hour are set in different settings. However, there are distinct similarities and differences in
particular issues they are addressing. For instance, these stories are similar in their understanding
of gender roles. In all the stories, women are considered to have little or no input at in the
societal. In the story Marriage Is Private Life Okeke choses Ugoye to marry Naemeka. However,
Ugoye has no option but have to follow the decision of her father and Okeke. Also in the story,
there is no mention of Okeke having a wife or Nnaemeka's mother living or dead. This means
that the author tries to show that the wife has no input. In the story, The Story of An a Hour Mrs.
Mallard is happy that she soon has the freedom to do as he wishes.
In both stories, no equality exists between male and the female. The reality is that life in
both the two stories revolves around gender roles. Chinua Achebe in her story indicates that it is
the role of women in society to decide while women have to follow...
