Introduction
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a government agency which has
the mandate of protecting the environment and human life (Environmental Protection Agency, 2019). The
EPA ensures that the Americans have clean water, land and air, ensures reduction of environmental risks,
ensures contaminated toxic sites and lands are cleaned up by the parties which are potentially responsible
for the same and the chemicals which are available in the market are reviewed in order to ensure safety
(Environmental Protection Agency, 2019). Therefore, in the process of the EPA pursuing its mandate of
ensuring the cleanup of contaminated sites by potentially responsible parties, it has been involved in the
cleanup of Kalamazoo River in Chicago region. Besides, Kalamazoo River was contaminated by
polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) chemicals found in waste disposals to the site. Therefore, this paper
will discuss the current problem, the current solution and the alternative solution in Kalamazoo River
contamination.
Chicago EPA Office and State Regulatory Agencies
The EPA regional office for region 5, that is, Chicago, is in Ralph Metcalfe Federal Building, 77
Wes Jackson Blvd in Chicago (Environmental Protection Agency, 2019). In addition, the state regulatory
agencies which has the mandate of protecting the environment in the region includes the Illinois
Environmental Agency which has the responsibility of safeguarding environmental quality in order to
ensure protection of health, welfare, property as well as quality of life in Illinois State. The Indiana
Department of Environmental Management is another state agency which protects the environment in
Indiana State (Environmental Protection Agency, 2019). Other state agencies are; the Michigan
Department of Environmental Quality, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and Ohio Environmental
Protection Agency.
