Stress management Techniques
Stressors are things that put you in a stressful situation or bring about stress to an individual
(Stafanaki, 2015). There are factors that can cause personal stress, and for my case, it’s my body
size and self-esteem, the acquisition of a job in future and keeping it, and money. I will discuss
each of these stressors in relation to the studies on stress management.
My body and self-esteem
In today's world, the youths are mostly influenced by celebrities and their amazing bodies that
are toned and are masculine. Due to the exposure to social media platforms where we get to
follow and adore these celebrities for their amazing bodies, we also want to be just like them.
That is why you find most people spending a lot of time in the gym and in front of the mirror in
order to get that body and shape. This shows that to a majority of the youth, the body size and
their self-esteem go together hand in hand. Most youths or rather most people, their self-esteem
is based on their body size, shape or formation. We as human beings usually have the mentality
of other people talking about us, our minds function in a way that shows that we are affected by
what people say about us (Butow, 2015). Positive comments encourage and boost our selfesteem and self-worth while the negative comments or talk usually reduces our self-esteem. The
aspect of one’s body is broad, it can be in terms of size in terms of weight, height; disability, skin
condition, dressing and any other factors in relation to physical appearance. In as much as there
could be people who are not really affected by their body appearance, there are many who are
affected.
Personally, I feel that my body size, which is as a result of my eating habit has quite grown and it
has been stressing me more because I tend to think that others will see me as a "fat" person. I
