Mental Health Disorders As Depicted In The Soloist
Based on a true story derived from the book of a reporter for the Los Angeles Times Steve
Lopez, The Soloist closely follows the lives of Lopez and a homeless man known as Nathaniel
Anthony Ayers Jr. Lopez runs into Nathaniel who is also an outstanding violinist who claims to
have attended Julliard but has only two strings. The two new acquaintances gradually build a
rapport with each other, as Lopez decides to explore Nathaniel's life and discover his great story
to publish in a series of columns on the newspaper. He discovers that Nathaniel was not brought
up in a well off family, but struggled with life until he was successful in joining Julliard. However,
Nathaniel had dropped out after just two years because his mental state was deteriorating with a
condition alleged to be schizophrenia; as it is hinted throughout the movie (Wright, 2009).
The Soloist depicts Nathaniel as a schizophrenic individual in a very well defined and
clinically accurate manner. The movie covers every single aspect of schizophrenia, from the basic
