argument against abortion is founded upon the assertion that since the time of conception, a fetus
is a person. The extreme conservative argument against abortion can be broken down into six
smaller arguments (Gibson, 1984): all persons have an equal right to life; all fetuses are persons;
hence, all fetuses have a right to life; it has never been morally acceptable to overrule an
innocent person’s right to life; abortion is a deliberate overriding of an individual’s (the fetus’s)
right to life; abortion has never been morally tolerable. Taking into account that this analysis is
widely held, it becomes a surprise that it disagrees with a variety of arguments given to support
