CONSENSUS MODEL
Introduction
The APRN consensus model is a technique that is used to outline the recommendations for
APRN uniform regulation licensure, accreditation, certification, and education. This is commonly
referred to as LACE. The model is applicable in all the American states. The main objective of the
model usually is to bring together the state and national legislatures, the medical practitioners and
the public to have a common understanding of the role of APRN. It aims at helping the APRNs to
practice their training and their qualification to the full extent.
The model was developed in the year 2008 by both the APRN Consensus Work Group and
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) APRN Advisory Committee in order
to have a standard definition of the role of an advanced practice registered nurse and also to outline
the various educational and clinical standards that the nurses must meet in order to have national
certification, have a state licensure and also to be able to have state privileges. There several
reasons for the development of the APRN consensus model. One is that there was lack of standard
definitions of roles related to APRN, lack of standardization in programs resulting to APRN
preparation, the proliferation of both specialties and subspecialties and there lacked a universal
legal recognition in the jurisdictions (Neff et al., 2018).
APRN Regulatory Essential Elements
There are four main regulatory essential elements when it comes to APRN, that is,
a) Licensure
Licensure refers to giving authority to practice. The licensure stakeholders usually are
represented in the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. Although the National Council of
State Board of Nursing not been a licensure body, it plays a vital role when it comes to representing
the interests of the members as well as that of the individual state boards of nursing. It is also
crucial in addressing the state-level legislature needs and also rulemaking.
b) Accreditation
Accreditation refers to the formal review as well as approval by a recognized educational
degree agency or certification program for nursing or nurse ...
